How To Get Military Records.  If you need military records follow the instructions on the National Archives & Records Administraion (NARA) Website under National Personnel Records Center  Military Personnel Records.  The Standard Form (SF) 180 can be downloaded from this site or you can have it mailed or faxed to you.

Special Extra Earnings for Military Service.  There was a lot of interest in this subject when I brought it up so, here is the information right from Social Security.

Soldiers’, Sailors’ Marines’ and Airmen’s Club in New York City.  This is a not-for-profit hotel exclusively for members of the armed forces (active duty, cadets, reserves, retirees, veterans) also, NYFD, NYPD, & EMS in mid-town Manhattan (NYC), walking distance from Grand Central Station, the Empire State Building, Penn Station, and the Port Authority Bus Terminal.  The rates go according to the rank you held (or hold) in the military, for example Enlisted E1-E4 is $25.00 per person daily rate Enlisted E5 and above $37.00 per person daily rate.  Check out there web site.  I’ve never stayed there but I know a Marine who did with his wife and said it was a good experience.  I have spoke to them on the phone and they seem very nice.  Please realize this is not a luxury hotel in Central Park but if you are looking for a more affordable way to stay in NYC this may be good for you.

A Presidential Memorial Certificate (PMC) is an engraved paper certificate, signed by the current President, to honor the memory of  honorably discharged deceased veterans.

Vet Scam.  I have heard vets tell me and have seen the advertisements for many years now that claim vets are entitled to life insurance refunds from when they served.  I have looked into this and find no credibility whatsoever.  Do not send money or information about yourself to these apparent scams.  VA officials caution veterans about a long running scam in which various groups charge fees to locate veterans who are eligible for the dividends.  Veterans eligible for the dividends have had VA life insurance policies in effect since they left the military and have received annual notification from the VA about the policies.

Stolen Valor Act.  President Bush signed legislation in December 2006 to crack down on people who falsely wear or claim military decorations.  The legislation, dubbed the “Stolen Valor Act,” calls for up to six months in prison for anyone who falsely claims to have earned a military honor, and up to a year in prison for fraudulently wearing a Purple Heart, Silver Star or other high military honor. Both crimes would also be classified as felonies, which can carry additional penalties such as limits on gun ownership and disqualification from certain public offices, depending on the state.  It also makes it a crime to make false claims about military awards, such as on resumes.
